Korea's only 5G 28GHz specialized network...This year's best example is a realistic military training system



AR Technology's "Development and Demonstration of Realistic Multilateral Collaborative Military Education and Training System Based on Eum 5G" and Fine VT's "Building a Global Diffusion Center for Eum 5G Remote Control Based on 28GHz" were selected as excellent examples of Eum 5G for the spread of 28GHz industrial convergence. Among them, AR Technology won the Minister of Science and ICT award in recognition of its efforts to build the Eum 5G convergence service.

The Ministry of Science and ICT held a "eum 5G Policy Conference" at COEX in Gangnam-gu, Seoul on the 17th to share the results of empirical cases of the "Creating a Foundation for 5G Industrial Convergence" project and to collect policy opinions for private-led spread. The conference, which began in 2022 and celebrated its third anniversary, was designed to support the discovery and construction of 5G convergence services by industry sector and to spread 5G innovation services by securing related references. 

eum 5G is a communication network that allows operators to build 5G specialized networks that can only be used in certain areas such as buildings and receive ultra-high-speed and ultra-connected 5G services. With the 28GHz frequency allocation of the three mobile telecommunication companies canceled, eum 5G is the only field where 5G 28GHz frequency is used in Korea.

AR Technology, which was selected as a representative example of this year's performance, used both 4.7GHz and 28GHz to build a joint 5G network at Daedeok University and built a system that allows more than 20 people to conduct military training in virtual space at the same time. It provides a realistic training environment by linking students in real time using mixed reality (XR). Using the large space of the gym, several people can move and train in virtual space.

Lee Soo-yeol, head of the AR Technology Research Institute, said, "The military training used training contents by wire because Wi-Fi could not be used due to security issues, but in this case, there were many restrictions on movement," adding, "We introduced joint 5G to solve this problem and completed it after two years of development." Director Lee added, "There was a gun death accident in the military just before the business was done, and I thought it was a virtual training that could solve this part."

Prior to the event, the Ministry of Science and ICT also presented a citation to encourage the efforts of companies and institutions participating in the project that have been working hard to build and spread the eum 5G convergence service. The winner of the Ministerial Award of the Ministry of Science and ICT is △ Lee Soo-yeol, head of the AR Technology Research Institute, △ Baek Ki-young, manager of Sejong Telecom, and the NIPA winner is △ Lee Young-tae, responsible for the Korea Information and Communication Technology Association (TTA), and the winner of the NIA Award is △ Lim Jeong-yeop, deputy director of the Korea Aerospace Industries.

The cases announced at the performance sharing meeting on this day are two cases in the 28GHz industrial convergence expansion sector and the 5G B2B (business-to-business transaction) service activation sector, which can be introduced immediately when promoting △ smart factories. △ 5G-based construction industry smart safety management system demonstration (Huran) △ 5G-based medical safety monitoring service demonstration (Korea Efficiency Association Consulting).

"eum 5G has become a key infrastructure that accelerates AI (artificial intelligence) and digital transformation in various fields such as manufacturing, logistics, and education, and the market size is expected to grow 42% annually from $2 billion in 2023 to $11.8 billion in 2028," said Song Sang-hoon, head of the Information and Communication Policy Division at the Ministry of Science and ICT. "In order to lead this market, the government has discovered core services for eum 5G from 2022 and realized 12 convergence services involving 51 companies and institutions, and 36 companies and institutions are using eum 5G at 74 locations across the country as the number of implementation cases has increased." Director Song said, "We will continue to support eum 5G to be actively used by the private sector and promote AI and digital transformation in our industry."
